Abstract

This work extends a previous model for computer system configuration planning developed by the authors. The problem is to optimally select CPU speed, device capacities, and file assignments so as to maximize system throughput subject to a fixed cost constraint. In the earlier work, the authors assumed that the record sizes for all files are equal, the block sizes of all devices are equal and these two in turn are equal. In this work the authors extend earlier results to allow each file a distinct record size and each device a distinct block size.
